Inhalation Therapy for Horses Diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or “Heaves”
Drugs Used:
- Albuterol: 90 mcg/puffs
- Fluticasone: 220 mcg/puffs
Treatment Protocol (for adult horse, approximately 1000 lbs):
Day | Drug | ‘puffs’ per Dose | Frequency |
1 – 14 | Albuterol | 5 | 30 minutes before excercise |
1 – 14 | Fluticasone | 9 | Twice daily |
15 – 21 | Fluticasone | 9 | Once daily |
21 – 27 | Fluticasone | 9 | Once every other day |
28 | Fluticasone | 9 | As needed, not more than once daily |
